Eelna Walch dry red wine 2025
Lagrein is one of the oldest and most characteristic red varieties of Alto Adige. The variety is mentioned as early as 1379.
To this day it is grown almost exclusively in northern Italy.
Lagrein is a relative of Petite Sirah, Shiraz and Pinot Noir, three well-known and beloved varieties. But while those varieties have filled the shelves of Israeli wine stores,
What makes the variety so special is the rare combination of a deep red, almost purple-black color, rich black berries, a strong structure with prominent tannins and lively acidity.
The wine is directly reminiscent of what we love about Petite Sirah, Shiraz and Pinot Noir, an acidity that makes it perfect for serving with food.
Fermentation in French and Slavic wooden barrels and aging in large Slavic barrels
Because the variety is rare and unknown, I will give two example of similar wines
1. Teroldego
Also northern Italian from the region.
Both produce wines with deep color, dark fruit, high acidity and noticeable tannins.
Teroldego is a bit “smoother” and softer than Lagrein
2. Syrah
Especially in the northern Rhone styles.
Aroma of black pepper, blueberries, and sometimes a little smokiness earth like the Lagrein

A little about Elena Walch
Elena Walch career began as an architect. After marrying a winemaker from a traditional and ancient winery in 1985, she decided to dedicate herself entirely to producing wines in South Tyrol according to her vision, moving beyond single harvests, cultivating more modern varieties, reducing the quantity of the harvest in favor of quality.
Many winemakers were skeptical of her vision, even the first woman in this region in a field that was entirely male and with revolutionary and innovative approaches in a traditional field Elena Wallach helped lead the quality revolution in South Tyrol, today her name is part of the elite of the Italian wine scene, the most prestigious and high-quality winery in Termein.
Currently managed by her daughters Julia and Karin
The winery regularly wins awards including one of the 100 best wines in the Italy by James Suckling, for beyond the clouds vintage 2020.
